Staff Software Engineer, Exchange Platform

About the role

As a Staff Backend Engineer on the Exchange Platform team, you will define the technical vision, long-term architectural roadmap and engineering standards for the platform modernization strategy. You will act as a primary technical leader across the Bitstamp exchange ecosystem, architecting cloud infrastructure for mission-critical, low-latency services and driving complex distributed systems integrations. The role is based in the Ljubljana, Slovenia office, with in-person attendance expected at least 3 days per week, and requires participation in an on-call rotation.

Key responsibilities

• Define and drive the long-term architectural vision for high-availability, low-latency cloud platforms and set engineering standards for performance, reliability and portability.
• Spearhead multi-quarter modernization initiatives, moving foundational services to resilient, containerized cloud environments and optimizing deployment pipelines and auto-scaling patterns.
• Lead the integration between Bitstamp's exchange backend and Robinhood's global infrastructure, solving complex cross-organization technical challenges.
• Design self-healing systems and intelligent automation to reduce operational load and improve developer velocity.
• Take end-to-end ownership of high-impact technical initiatives, balancing speed, resilience, cost and maintainability.
• Mentor senior engineers, lead architectural design reviews and establish engineering best practices.
• Act as a senior escalation point for high-severity incidents, lead post-mortems and set up safeguards for 24/7 platform integrity.

Required profile

• 8+ years of experience in backend and distributed systems engineering, with a track record as a technical lead or Staff-level engineer in high-scale environments.
• Ability to take ambiguous, organization-wide problems from inception to production.
• Strong communication skills to build technical consensus and influence cross-functional roadmaps across multiple geographies.
• A pragmatic, systems-thinking approach to supporting a 24/7 financial exchange.
