Safety Engineer – Robotic Cells
sunrise · Ljubljana
Job description
About the role
Sunrise Robotics builds flexible robotic cells combining two industrial robot arms, cameras, a safety PLC, radar presence sensing and software that adapts to different products. This Safety Engineer owns the safety of the cells from the first design decision to deployment on a customer's floor, covering functional safety, software safety and sign-off of every deployment. The role is remote, within three hours of Central European Time, with regular time at the Ljubljana cells and customer sites.
Key responsibilities
- Own the safety concept for the cell platform: hazards and safety functions assessed once, so each new application assesses only what it changes.
- Provide safety input to robotics software from the first design review, embed safety requirements in product documents and sign off each solution design.
- Specify each safety function in the safety PLC and robot safety controller, including reliability, and prove it works.
- Carry out risk assessments, prepare the CE technical file and the Declaration of Conformity, and support the move to the new EU Machinery Regulation.
- Handle site safety for each deployment, from layout and guarding to operator access and acceptance tests.
- Define safe testing rules in R&D, including Reduced Safety Mode, and investigate root causes of safety faults and incidents.
- Write safety content for the cell manual and answer customers' safety questions in presales.
Required profile
- At least five years of machinery safety work on industrial machines or robotic cells, including risk assessments and CE marking.
- Functional safety experience: specifying and validating safety functions on safety PLCs, robot safety controllers and sensors such as radar, scanners and light curtains.
- Working knowledge of EU machinery law, including the new Machinery Regulation, and ISO 12100 and ISO 13849.
- Ability to read software design and discuss how algorithms behave around people; experience making safety decisions where no standard gives a direct answer.
- Clear written English and willingness to travel about 25% of the time.
- A recognised machinery safety qualification (e.g. TÜV Functional Safety Engineer or CMSE) is a strong advantage.
Required skills
- Functional safety on safety PLCs and robot safety controllers
- Risk assessment and CE marking
- ISO 12100 and ISO 13849
- EU Machinery Regulation
