Research Scientist I - Upstream Processing

About the role

Novartis is seeking a motivated Research Scientist I to join its R&D unit in Mengeš, Slovenia. The role focuses on upstream processing (USP) to support the development of a diverse portfolio of biotherapeutic modalities.

Key responsibilities

• Expand and maintain CHO cells in suspension from small‑scale to up to 200 L bioreactors.
• Use stably transfected CHO lines to express recombinant monoclonal antibodies, multispecific antibodies and other therapeutic proteins using single‑use systems.
• Perform experimental steps and laboratory techniques according to established protocols, collaborating with senior team members.
• Maintain lab organization, equipment, and prepare sterile devices for production runs.
• Document experimental results in detail, present updates, and contribute constructively at lab meetings.

Required profile

• MSc in biotechnology, biochemistry, chemical technology or related life‑science discipline, or BSc with at least 2 years relevant experience.
• Strong theoretical knowledge and hands‑on experience with mammalian cell technology, including stable cell lines, wave culture systems and stirred‑tank bioreactors.
• Excellent learning ability to acquire new technologies and equipment expertise.
• Organizational skills to manage multiple projects in parallel.
• Reliable, flexible team player.
