Research Scientist I – Downstream Processing

About the role

Novartis is seeking a motivated Research Scientist I to join its R&D unit in Mengeš, Slovenia. The role focuses on downstream processing (DSP) of recombinant proteins, supporting the development of diverse biotherapeutic modalities. You will work in a collaborative laboratory environment, contributing to the evaluation of developability for biologics across Novartis Biomedical Research and Development units.

Key responsibilities

• Perform downstream purification of recombinant proteins from suspension CHO cultures, scaling from small batches to 200 L bioreactors.
• Operate Akta liquid chromatography systems, filtration units, and centrifugation equipment for monoclonal antibodies, multispecific antibodies, and other therapeutic proteins.
• Execute experimental protocols under guidance from senior lab members and maintain accurate laboratory records.
• Maintain lab organization, equipment readiness, and preparation of devices for purification runs.
• Process samples, prepare shipments, interpret results, and present findings in lab meetings.
• Support USP activities, including expansion and maintenance of CHO suspension cultures.

Required profile

• MSc in biochemistry, chemistry, chemical technology or related field, or BSc with at least two years relevant experience.
• Strong theoretical knowledge and hands‑on experience in recombinant protein purification.
• Familiarity with CHO cell culture and large‑scale bioprocessing.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast‑paced research environment.
