R&D Engineer – Equipment Development and Automation

About the role

Lumentum d.o.o. – Optična vlakna is seeking an early‑career engineer to develop new equipment for the automated manufacture of high‑precision optical assemblies. The role blends mechanical/mechatronic design, precision positioning, sensing, software and process automation, taking concepts from laboratory proof‑of‑concept to reliable production.

Key responsibilities

• Design and develop mechanical and mechatronic equipment for precision optical assembly, including CAD models, drawings and specifications.
• Select and integrate motion stages, actuators, cameras, sensors, optics and other components to meet accuracy and stability requirements.
• Create automated sequences for loading, positioning, alignment, processing and verification of components.
• Develop control software, instrument communication, data collection and reporting tools.
• Build, commission and troubleshoot prototypes, diagnosing issues in mechanics, controls, sensing or software.
• Collaborate with process engineers to translate laboratory requirements into production‑ready equipment.

Required profile

• Strong engineering fundamentals with practical CAD experience and understanding of mechanisms, tolerances and manufacturing methods.
• Interest or experience in automation, robotics, motion control, sensing or machine development.
• Ability to decompose complex systems, identify technical risks and test solutions.
• Programming experience in Python, C++, C#, LabVIEW or PLC environments.
• Hands‑on approach to building, testing and improving equipment.
• Clear communication skills to work across mechanical, software, optics and manufacturing teams.
