Staff AI Engineer

About the role

A partner company is recruiting a Staff AI Engineer based in Slovenia. The role shapes and delivers high-impact AI initiatives, builds production-ready solutions that improve customer experience, and provides technical leadership across engineering teams. It combines hands-on engineering with architectural influence, leading projects from design through production deployment and strengthening the shared AI platform.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design, development and delivery of major AI initiatives, including AI-powered assistants, contextual data systems and generative AI features.
• Take ownership of major AI projects from architecture and planning through deployment and ongoing optimisation.
• Influence architectural decisions across engineering teams, with particular responsibility for AI architecture and shared platform infrastructure.
• Establish AI quality frameworks: automated evaluations, regression testing, guardrails, agent tracing, human feedback and production monitoring.
• Design and implement reliable AI agents and tool integrations, balancing deterministic code and LLM capabilities while addressing security, latency, reliability and cost.
• Drive engineering initiatives such as AI evaluation standards, agentic software development practices, code review processes and technical documentation.
• Collaborate with Product, Design, QA, Operations and engineering stakeholders, and mentor engineers and share knowledge.

Required profile

• Staff Engineer or equivalent level of software engineering experience, with a proven ability to lead complex, ambiguous initiatives as a hands-on individual contributor.
• Demonstrated experience designing, building and deploying production-grade LLM applications, AI agents or generative AI features used by real customers.
• Experience building and maintaining AI evaluation frameworks combining automated testing, agent traces, human feedback and production monitoring.
• Strong technical leadership, sound judgment on build-versus-buy decisions and model selection, and a pragmatic, measurement-driven approach to AI development.

Required skills

• Backend and platform engineering, particularly Python and Django, PostgreSQL, Redis, asynchronous workers and REST or GraphQL APIs.
• Ability to design scalable shared AI infrastructure with well-defined interfaces, efficient caching and robust tenant isolation.
• Understanding of AI agent architecture, tool design and orchestration.
