Senior Scientist, Upstream Process Development

About the role

Novartis is looking for a Senior Expert in Science & Technology for upstream process development in Menges, Slovenia. This is a 12-month fixed-term, onsite role. The person leads and manages project and network activities within a cross-functional team, guides team members, manages laboratory operations and develops science and technology strategies.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and optimise upstream processes, evaluate and implement new technologies and apply knowledge from scientific and technical literature.
• Present results at internal and external conferences and network meetings, and contribute to scientific publications and patent applications.
• Lead functional subteams, assess project resource needs and timelines, and represent the function in technical teams.
• Manage complex equipment, infrastructure maintenance and investment planning; interpret data and draw conclusions.
• Oversee project scientific activities, develop process procedures and development guidelines, and prepare scientific reports.
• Support regulatory submission documentation and act as technical expert during audits, inspections and due diligence reviews.
• Resolve issues promptly, lead knowledge transfer to colleagues, departments and external contractors, and take responsibility for personal and professional development.
• Drive compliance with company policies, regulatory and HSE requirements, and continuous improvement.

Required profile

• Doctorate in a relevant natural science discipline and/or track record in a comparable position.
• Active proficiency in English.
• Good communication skills, proactive mindset, teamwork and initiative.

Required skills

• Laboratory instrumentation and manufacturing processes.
• Digital and IT skills, including Microsoft Office and AI tools.
